BEAKERHEAD FAQ'S

Why am I getting emails from TELUS Spark?

In April 2022, Beakerhead became part of TELUS Spark Science Centre! Beakerhead now operates as a TELUS Spark program.

Can I still use Better Impact to sign up for Beakerhead shifts?

As of February 2024, Galaxy Digital is the volunteer scheduling site for all TELUS Spark departments and programs, including Beakerhead. If you had a Better Impact

account before, we moved it over to Galaxy Digital for you in February. Use the “forgot password” function and follow the links to activate your account.

Why do I need an interview to volunteer?

If you are a new volunteer, we want to make sure that TELUS Spark is the right fit for you, whether you’re volunteering during Beakerhead or for another role at  the science centre.

If you have previously volunteered at Beakerhead, you do not need an interview and can bypass this step. Please just type in what year(s) and role(s) you worked in the Interview section.

Why do I need a police check?

All volunteers 18 years and older now require a Police Information Check (PIC) to ensure a high standard of safety for the many children and families visiting TELUS

Spark, including during special events like Beakerhead. If you need a new or renewed PIC, we will cover this at no cost to you.

If you are under 18, you DO NOT need a police check. When

you reach this step, please upload a word document with your full name, your birth date, and a note that you are under 18.

I’m not 18 yet. Can I volunteer?

Yes! Beakerhead (day and night) is an all-ages event. Some volunteer positions may be designated as 18+, but all oth roles are available to you.

What roles are available for Beakerhead?

Available roles and shift times are listed on the Opportunities page.

What kind of perks do volunteers receive?

  • As a special thanks for contributing to Beakerhead, you will receive:
  • A swag bag with goodies from the Spark Store
  • A limited edition Beakerhead patch
  • 2 General Admission tickets to TELUS Spark
  • A coupon for a free cone at the Astronaut Ice Cream Cafe
  • One free meal at the Spark Eatery per shift worked
  • Free access to explore Beakerhead (September 20-22) before or after your volunteer shift! (subject to building capacity)

In addition to the above, all active volunteers receive the following through Spark’s volunteer Loyalty Program:

  • 25% off at the Spark Store, Spark Eatery, and Astronaut Ice Cream Cafe
  • 60 hours: 2 General Admission tickets to TELUS Spark
  • 100 hours: A professional reference letter
  • 125 hours: 1 free annual TELUS Spark membership + 2 General Admission tickets
  • 50 hours: An additional 2 General Admission tickets

For every subsequent 250 hours worked: An additional 2 General Admission Tickets

How many hours am I expected to volunteer?

Many hands make light work! While there is no minimum time commitment, we would love for each volunteer to contribute at least 8-10 hours during the festival. Every hour volunteered brings you closer to another awesome perk!

I used to volunteer on a specific Beakerhead crew. Can I do that again?

Crew structure and role titles are different from previous years, but we’ve made sure that equivalent or similar positions are available wherever possible. If you’ve

read through the Opportunities and can’t find the role you’re looking for, please contact us.
