CODING SUMMER CAMP CODE QUEST (8-10) 2024 - HALF SHIFT AM

Expired

Description

To register for this shift Coding Experience is Required.

We need a minimum commitment from out volunteers to make this a mutually beneficial relationship, and we prefer consistency. We need at minimum 6-7 shifts (minimum 1 per week) over the course of our 8 weeks of camp, preferably on the same day. This can be a half or full day shift. Obviously, more than that is welcome and encouraged but that is our minimum.

Responsibilities:

Support Program Delivery (Extra hands and helpers in the room)
Lead group games with the kids during breaks or program transition times.
Preparation and Clean Up of Program Materials.
Read stories to the group during breaks and program transition times.
Extra eyes and ears towards supervision during free play blocks in galleries and outside.
Support general administration tasks such as lunch program delivery or organizing and filing waiver forms.

Required skills, experience, and/or equipment:

Coding experience is require. Code Quest works with Bloxel, Microsoft MakeCode and Block Coding for each camper to build a video game and video game character. Experience with these programs is seen as an asset.

Supporting Campers in problem solving and debugging their coding programs.

Enthusiasm, Passion or Interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Subjects
Interest in working with and support School Age Children ages 5-12
Comfort in supporting hands-on learning using real tools. Ex. using scissors cardboard saws and hot glue guns.
Interest in learning proactive and supportive classroom management techniques that utilize coaching strategies based on the social-emotional development needs and abilities of our campers.

Potential risks/health and safety concerns:

This is a high-energy position that requires staff and volunteers to be on their feet for the majority of the shift. Very few tasks involve sitting for long periods so volunteers will need to be able to move about the building, and move materials about the building for the majority of their time with us.

Comfort in facilitating the use of real tools with children would be considered an asset. On-the-job training will be provided and a level of comfort achieved before being asked to support a task, in order to maintain the safety of our campers as well as staff and volunteers.

A good portion of the day will be spent outside in a variety of weather conditions. Dressing for the weather and level of activity is required. Close-toed, supportive, and comfortable shoes are mandatory.

How will volunteers benefit from this role?

This is an amazing environment for those who love giving back to youth, or who are looking to develop skills in towards careers that involve or support young children. They will observe and learn from different program delivery strategies and styles, different classroom management strategies, and generally gain experience on how to function, support and work within a fast paced and engaging team environment.
